Do you know what you’re supposed to do after a traffic crash? If it’s a minor fender bender, most people pull over, share license and insurance information, and move on.
But is all that required? Or, more importantly, are you actually neglecting to do something you should be doing?
Following are a few things you should know in the event of a traffic crash.
If you can still drive, you should pull off the main road. You also should exchange driver’s insurance, license, and automobile registration information with the other driver.
- If someone is injured, help them by calling for assistance. In fact, you must call the police in the event of an injury.
- Don’t leave. Even if the accident is not your fault and no one was injured, you could be accused of leaving the scene. This is usually considered a misdemeanor punishable by up to 93 days in jail and a $500 fine.
- A hit-and-run with injury is often considered a felony.
- Every Michigan driver must have at least the minimum insurance. Who is at fault in the accident makes a difference when it comes to jail time or lawsuits.
- Additional penalties may apply if the accident was caused by a drunken driver, especially in the event of someone’s death. Such felony charges could include vehicular manslaughter, and the driver could spend several years in prison.
If you or someone you know fled the scene of an accident, seek legal help first. You should also talk with a bail bondsperson for financial arrangements.
